HAI serves as the secretariat of the alliance that advocates for policies that prioritize transparency, accountability, and fairness in the use of algorithmic technology within the healthcare sector.

Next to her research activities, she works as a consultant on medical AI regulation for non-profit organisation Health Action International. She is also the co-chair of the European Commission Thematic Network 2022 on The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Health Outcomes for Key Populations: Navigating Health Inequalities.

… She transitioned to academia in January 2021, following a legal career as a corporate-commercial attorney specializing in technology law, among other things. Her research encompasses European, international, and comparative law for biomedical technologies, the ethico-legal governance for AI systems, and future fore-sighting/horizon scanning for emerging technologies. She co-led a European Commission Health Policy Platform project on the impact of artificial intelligence on health outcomes of marginalised groups. She also currently leads the UK & European chapter of the global Responsible Metaverse Alliance as Director of Research; and is an invited member of the United Nations (UN) International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Working Group on the Metaverse, focusing on competition, economics, standards and regulatory aspects of the Metaverse. She is currently Co-I in a UKRI-funded project on regulatory science & innovation networks focused on spatial computing, Web3.0 and the Metaverse. Pin Lean has joined the alliance because of her work intersecting law, technologies and health & medicine, using intersectional, feminist, and human rights-based approaches. She believes, by interrogating the complex and interconnected ways in which people experience discrimination and disadvantage, root causes of inequality and injustice can be revealed, inform the development of more effective and inclusive policies / programs, and hold governments and other powerful actors accountable for their human rights obligations in health and medicine.

She obtained her doctorate degree at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she studied how the Dutch National Health Care Institute, a semi-autonomous regulatory agency, renders account for its decisions to different publics.Her motivation to join the Digital Rights and Health Alliance stems from the great perceived pressures and incentives  in practice, policy, and industry to accelerate AI-innovation in Dutch healthcare, driven by concerns about scarcity of healthcare staff, that she sees in her research. She finds that, in this context, the prevention of exacerbating health inequity, of shifting power relations and the protection of fundamental rights, as described in the manifesto, need to be carefully addressed in European and national regulation and policymaking.

 

… and services. She has researched the impact of artificial intelligence, automated decision-making and emerging technologies on persons with disabilities. Her other interests include online privacy, cybersecurity and risks linked to digital ID systems. She was appointed to the European Commission ehealth stakeholder group in 2020.

…between Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Spain) and Edith Cowan University (Australia). In 2022, Jaisalmer was selected to take part in Unleash Social Innovation Lab, in India. She also has prior experience working for the European Institutions, providing feedback to policy at HaDEA and monitoring health projects at EISMEA.

Currently, Jaisalmer contributes to the development of people-centered digital policies that enhance population health. She works to ensure that equity, privacy, autonomy, and accountability are at the bases of the design and deployment of digital health tools, including artificial intelligence-based tools. Moreover, she advocates for ethical use of health data by healthcare workers, researchers, innovators, and policymakers, especially in the light of the creation of the European Health Data Space.
